Wind Speed & Crane Operations

Technical Note / 001

UAE crane regulations require mobile crane operators to halt lifts when wind speeds exceed manufacturer-specified limits — typically in the 9–14 m/s range depending on the crane model and load chart. Exceeding that threshold, even briefly, materially increases the risk of load swing, tip-over, or structural overload.

The practical difficulty isn't knowing the rule — it's having a reliable, continuously visible wind speed reading at the point of lift, not an app checked once in the morning. Conditions at height, especially on a boom tip or exposed mast position, can differ significantly from ground-level readings.

What a dedicated wind monitor actually gives a crew

A mast- or boom-mounted anemometer feeding a cabin or site-office display provides current, peak, and average wind speed continuously — not a single reading, but a trend. Min/max memory documents exactly what peak wind occurred during a shift, which matters both for in-the-moment decisions and after-the-fact compliance records.
